More Information

Program Summary:

Fresh Bucks is a produce incentive program that provides a 50% discount on fresh produce in participating Northside food retailers. The collaborative project, managed by Northside Fresh Coalition, began as a way to make fresh produce more affordable, increase foot traffic in newly opened food retailers, and keep community dollars on the northside. The project was ideated and planned through surveys, community visioning sessions, and input from many community partners. Northside Fresh partners that have been involved in this project include: Appetite for Change, Twin Cities Mobile Market, K’s Grocery & Deli, University of Minnesota – Extension, Brightside Produce, Minneapolis Health Department, Hunger Solutions, and North Market.

Purpose of the
Program

The purpose of Fresh Bucks Program is to improve the affordability and accessibility of fresh produce for Northsiders. By providing a 50% discount on fresh produce at partner retail locations, the program hopes to

  1. increase produce purchase and consumption
  2. increase demand for fresh produce (especially Northside grown produce)
  3. support sales and sustainability for community focused Northside food retailers

In the short term, Fresh Bucks will allow Northsiders to stretch their dollars and purchase more fresh produce. The long term goal is to positively impact retailers, continue building a healthy community, and provide opportunities for Northside food retailers to source produce from Northside growers.

How it Works

Everyone is eligible; there are no requirements for using Fresh Bucks.  Customers do not have to be enrolled in any benefits or programs to use the Fresh Bucks discount.

Fresh fruit and vegetables qualify for the Fresh Bucks discount. There are no purchasing limits.

Customers bring qualifying items to the register or check out and a 50% discount will be applied automatically, if they enroll in the Fresh Bucks Program and get a Fresh Bucks card. Days and times of program depend on the retailer.

The Fresh Bucks card will be given to customers on their first purchase using the Fresh Bucks discount. The purposes of the Fresh Bucks card are to get a sense of how many individual people use Fresh Bucks and if the program increases fresh produce purchasing.  Customers do not need to have their Fresh Bucks card on them to use the discount in the future, but it is preferred. Everyone should come to a participating retailer and get a card of their own. There is no competition or limited supply.

Any information to register card holders taken by participating locations is only to make sure no one is given more than one card. Personal identifying or sensitive information such as address or private health is NOT tracked. Customers can use both Fresh Bucks benefits and other benefits (EBT, WIC, Market Bucks, and Coupon) on the same purchase. The Fresh Bucks discount only applies to the fresh fruit and vegetables in an EBT/WIC purchase and not other items. Fresh Bucks can be used at K’s Grocery and Deli, Twin Cities Mobile Market Northside stops, North Market, and participating Brightside North Minneapolis Farm Stands.

Fresh Bucks funding is intended to last until Dec 1, 2019, but funds may not last until then.
